Israelis seem to want peace, but what seems to divide them politically is how to get there. And while not all subscribe to the left-leaning politics of former Knesset member Yael Dayan (shown next to a picture of her late father), she does seem to encapsulate a certain optimism regarding the future of the peace process:
(Dayan:) “I think most of our thoughts don’t go back to the wars, but go forward to the task of achieving peace.”
(Kuznits:) “Israel is now in existence for 60 years. What’s going to be in the next 60 years?”
(Dayan:) “We have peace with Egypt, we have peace with Jordan, and certainly we shouldn’t wait another 60 to conclude negotiations with the Palestinians and perhaps with Syria and Lebanon.”
(Kuznits:) “What do you see in what’s happening (in the world around you) that makes you so optimistic toward the future of Israel?”
(Dayan:) “I’m optimistic because it’s a necessity -- because I can’t imagine Israel just forever being in a condition of war. Peaceful Israel can achieve... you know, the sky’s the limit! And the same goes for the Palestinians."
Israel's 60th independence day celebrations may be wrapping up here, but they are just beginning in Philadelphia, where the annual celebration will be held May 18th. For more information go to www.jewishphilly.org.
