The Philadelphia Bar Association has passed a resolution opposing Pennsylvania's proposed amendment defining marriage.
Pennsylvania lawmakers are considering a couple of bills to define marriage as a union between one man and one woman, and to prohibit recognizing any legal status which is equivalent to marriage.
Alan Feldman, chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association, says that would jeapordize the benefits given to domestic partners:
"The Pennsylvania Constitution is all about protecting people's rights. This proposed amendment doesn't protect anyone, and on the contrary it jeapordizes certain rights people now have."
He says members will now talk to lawmakers to try and persuade them that an amendment could only hurt residents -- and perhaps strip some of crucial health care and pension benefits.
