Mayor Michael Nutter and a broad coalition of groups want more Philadelphians to apply for the federal tax rebate (see previous story).
This push is for big money, an estimated $2.25 million divided among 75,000 people, many of them seniors who normally don't have to file an income tax return because they make so little money.
But filing the return, even now, after the deadline, is the key to getting the rebate -- which on the low end is at least $300. Mayor Nutter:
"For some, maybe $300 is not a lot of money. But where I grew up in West Philadelphia, it still is."
So, city agencies and citizens groups will be trying to find those people and guide them through the process. Some may need to be assured that the rebate does not count as income for government benefits decisions.
Mayor Nutter says there are 40 locations around Philadelphia to get free help. But, he warns, watch out for scammers.
