Haddonfield, NJ Kids Honor Troops With Heroic Pillowcases

by KYW's Sonia Rincon

More than 400 pillow cases are on their way to soldiers wounded in Iraq, courtesy of the kids of the Haddonfield school district.

They're comforting symbols. Pillowcases with superheros on them; Spiderman, Batman, and Superman:

"It started when an injured or wounded soldier brought her own Spiderman pillow case to the hospital ward with her. The other patients saw them and really liked them."

Haddonfield school nurse Loretta Macconi heard the story from an air force nurse. And she and the other school nurses decided to try to collect enough superhero pillowcases for every wounded soldier.

They had kids of all ages in the school district bring them in. The message to the troops: "They're heroes too:"

"Hopefully they'll be able to relate to it. And our kids were really excited too. Because this is something they relate to also and it's kind of like a connection between them and the soldiers."
