Phila. Prisons Join Automatic Victim Notification System

by KYW's John Ostapkovich

The Philadelphia prison system is now part of a network that notifies interested parties of a change in an inmate's whereabouts.

"You've reached PA-SAVIN..."

That's part of the greeting you'll get calling 1-866-9PA-SAVIN.

Right now, the service can track inmates in Philadelphia prisons and those in 25 other Pennsylvania county lockups, and will notify those who sign up if the offender is moved or released or escapes.

Walter Phillips, chairman of the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency:

"Victims often feel afraid and powerless after a crime had occurred. They want to know what is going to happen to with the person or persons who committed the crime against them."

And thanks to anonymous access via a PIN code, PA-SAVIN (Pennsylvania Statewide Automated Victim Information and Notification) does just that.

Backers say this system is especially useful in domestic violence cases.
