Lasers Added to Anti-Speeding Arsenal on A.C. Expressway

by KYW's David Madden

New Jersey State Police along the Atlantic City Expressway are now using laser guns to catch speeders.

Two handheld laser units, at $5,000 each, have been purchased by the South Jersey Transportation Authority for use along the 44-mile toll road. They have been in use for a couple years on the New Jersey Turnpike.

Drivers routinely ignore the posted speed limits -- 65 mph along most of the road and 15 mph going through the toll booths, even when you use EZ Pass.

State police lieutenant Steven Cozzi says these units can better pinpoint a violator:

"With one trooper utilizing the laser and a couple of chase cars down the road, we manage and monitor speed a lot more effectively than with the use of radar."

Four of those electronic road signs are posted along the expressway warning drivers the lasers are in use.

Oh, by the way -- if you have a radar detector and it doesn’t have laser capability, it’ll do you no good.
