With the primary election in Philadelphia now just three months away, City Council members are at odds over whether to allow campaign posters on utility poles.
Currently it's illegal to post any signs on utility poles in Philadelphia, whether it be for a candidate or a mortgage. Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell wants to change the law to allow for campaign posters:
“Posters to me seem as much a part of Philadelphia as cheese steaks and Philadelphia pretzels.”
But many of her colleagues, like Frank DiCicco, says campaign posters only create a mess:
“You can’t even figure out who’s running, because everyone’s slapping their poster on someone else’s poster, on top of someone else’s poster.”
A council committee did approve Blackwell’s bill, though seriously watered down; eight out of ten Council districts would be exempted, meaning the ban on campaign posters in those areas would still hold.
