US Navy Frigate Klakring Spends Weekend in Phila.

by KYW's Michelle Durham

The US Navy frigate USS Klakring docked Thursday at Penn's Landing, and the public is invited aboard for tours on Saturday.

The Klakring is the first of several Navy ships that will sail into Philadelphia this summer.

The 314 sailors aboard were greeted warmly with smiles and Philly-style treats from the USO and retired US Navy sailors. They'll enjoy the sights, sounds, and foods of Philadelphia as those of us who live in the Delaware Valley will be able to get a firsthand look at the ship they call home.

Penn's Landing Corporation spokesman Joe Forkin says the ship will be open to the public from 10am to 4pm on Saturday:

"We actually have an exciting and aggressive ship visit program, which complements our summer season. We have over five naval ships already scheduled, as well as sailing vessels, working ships, and Coast Guard vessels coming."

Dan Soldano of the Battleship New Jersey in Camden, NJ explains what this welcome means to the sailors of the Klakring:

"It means the world. They've been at sea, they don't know where to go or eat, and to see a friendly face that shakes their hand and says 'thank you for your service' means the world to them."
