Noted Environmentalist Paul Hawken Pens New Book

by KYW's John Ostapkovich

A California author, activist and entrepreneur says he's discovered the largest social movement in history.

It's not only kids who play connect-the-dots and find the picture hidden within. Paul Hawken, the author of Blessed Unrest, did too. He'd been giving lectures for years on environmental issues, talked to people afterward, collected business cards and gradually became convinced that those fighting for clean water, clean air, gender equality and living wages were on the same side:

"When you pollute the river, you have an environmental issue but you have a social justice issue, a nutrition issue, a health issue. I became fascinated by the fact that even the movement itself doesn't know it's the largest social movement in history."

And it operates largely out of media view because it is cooperative not confrontational.
