Philadelphia Republicans Thursday were to announce their candidate for Mayor, and even they admit he faces an uphill battle.
Al Taubenberger, head of the Northeast Chamber of Commerce, is the GOP’s choice in the Mayor’s race.
Brian O’Neill, the ranking Republican on City Council, says Taubenberger would make a fine mayor:
“He’s been running the Northeast Chamber of Commerce for probably the last 10-15 years, and is just an excellent spokesman for the city.”
But O’Neill minces no words in admitting that Taubenberger will have a tough time winning in this heavily-Democratic town:
“Clearly when you look at the results of the last race, Katz verse Street, it makes you wonder if a Republican can win in Philadelphia.”
The Democrats have five major candidates vying for that party’s nomination.
