A fuel surcharge is now in effect for Philadelphia taxi riders.
Tack on an extra 50 cents to your cab fare in Philadelphia. The surcharge was approved to help cabbies cover the skyrocketing cost of gasoline. That brings the base fare from $2.70 to $3.20.
Cabbies say $4-a-gallon gas is hitting them hard, and taxi riders, like Rita Giandonato of South Philadelphia, are taking it in stride:
"Well, everybody's got to pay something more. I had to drive home from the shore yesterday and I had to pay extra, so, gas, gas, gas. The cab driver, that's all he talked about was the gas prices."
Another surcharge is also in effect, $1 per person for each additional passenger on trips to and from the airport.
