It’s been said that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Well, that’s not necessarily true.
Older dogs are quite capable of changing unwanted behavior patterns and adopting brand new ones, as well as learning new tricks -- effectively at that. In fact, senior dogs are just as capable of reconditioning and training as younger dogs.
Defining the age of a senior dog varies according to his size. Check with your vet. Smaller dogs are considered senior from approximately 9 to 12 years of age, medium size dogs from 7 to 8 years and larger dogs from 6 to 8 years of age.
Signs of aging include stiff joints, a graying muzzle, and overall lack of energy.
Take your dog for regular checkups every six months. Consider feeding him two smaller meals instead of one larger one. Give your dog an adequate amount of exercise but adjust it according to his changing needs.
Most of all, give him quality time with you. Keep him happy, healthy, and comfortable.
