Feeding the Film Industry

by KYW's John McDevitt

Lights, camera, smorgasbord!  Area catering businesses are benefiting from all the filming going on in our area.

When it comes to food on many sets, extras eat like stars.

(Extra:)  "They feed you very well -- it's like you are on a cruise ship."

There is a craft service table (photo above) packed with snacks, available all day long. And when it's meal time, caterers like Linda Salatino of "In Good Taste" in Flourtown, Pa. serve up breakfast, lunch, and dinner to crews on film and television productions all over the greater Philadelphia area.

I tried to stay out of Linda's way as she prepared for a job the following day. She was checking on some beets roasting in the oven:

"This is going to be for a cold salad -- beets and blanched green beans with goat cheese, and a maple-honey balsamic vinaigrette -- along with shrimp brochettes, chicken brochettes, a Mediterranean orzo, and dessert."

She prepares days ahead of time, creating a menu, shopping, and prepping, all the while keeping in mind the special requests.

"Demands -- oh my heavens!  We have people that are lactose intolerant, we have people that are vegans, we have people who have celiac (disease)."

And there are those environmentally conscious sets: no styrofoam cups, bowls, or plates.

Salatino says she enjoys working with members of the entertainment industry, and apparently they like her. She has been booked solid since February.
