Making Our City Even More Famous

by KYW's John McDevitt

Sometimes a location where a movie is filmed sees an economic benefit -- such as a boost in tourism -- long after the motion picture goes to DVD.

The Jamaican Jerk Hut, a restaurant on South Street near Broad in South Philadelphia, was  a location used for the movie In Her Shoes, starring Cameron Diaz. That was three years ago, and manager Georgette Champagnie (at far right in photo with fellow manager Lisa Wilson) says that to this day business is amazing, with inquiries from all over the country:

"A lot of people are not really aware sometimes that we are here, but once they have seen the movie, a lot of people... it's opened up a door for new clientèle."

And with all the unmistakable Philly sites on the big screen, tourists seek out those locales -- which is good for the entire city.

Mark Beyerle, owner of Specialty Tours and Events, runs a bus tour called "Philadelphia in the Movies."  More than 25 films are represented on the 2½-hour excursion.

"It's a rolling movie theatre. It has a giant plasma TV in the front and Surround Sound, so as you are rolling around the city to the movie sites we will show you the actual movie clip of the place you are in front of."

Bill Arrowood (right) is the owner of Bluestone Road, a location scouting business for television and films. He says your property could appear in movies -- just register with Bluestone Road:

"Interiors, exteriors, cars, boats, planes. If it has a intrinsic value and it's unique, I think somebody is always looking for it."

And if selected by the movie makers, you could even earn some cash.  (The amount is negotiable.)
