Thousands Attend Immigration Rally in Love Park

by KYW's Steve Tawa

They traveled from points across the region, meeting in Center City's "Love Park" to rally against proposed federal immigration reforms.  It was one of many organized protests in the nation today.

Many people in the crowd hailed from Hispanic, African or Asian backgrounds, and in their different languages, sang or chanted the same tune.

Whether they were holding signs that read "we are the American dream," or "immigration rights are human rights," they were united about their desire to be Americans and hold a job.

Efran Noriega works at a car wash in Camden.

“Immigration is for all the people. I've been here 11-years. I have my family in Mexico.”

One of the organizers in the Chinatown community, Steven Zhu, says they are against a controversial house bill.

“There is an unreasonable bill in the house. We're supporting Senator Arlen Specter's bill. We have new immigrants affected by this bill.”

Those at the love park rally want congress to give them a path of citizenship, basic civil rights, and protection in the workplace.

Another demonstration was held at the Montgomery County Courthouse.
