Local Toddler Remains Critical After Being Left All Day in Sweltering Car

by KYW's Mark Abrams

A 14-month-old boy remained hospitalized in critical condition at the Children's Hospital of Pennsylvania on Wednesday after being found unconscious inside his grandfather’s car at a Delaware County technical school on Tuesday.

Marple Township police say the boy was apparently left accidentally inside the car at the CHI Institute, at Sproul and Lawrence Roads, where his grandfather is an instructor. Chief Tomas Murray says the child was in the care of his grandfather, who usually took him to day care, but apparently forgot he had his grandson with him and went in to work about 8am:

"He was discovered by the grandfather who went out to the car to get something approximately 25 minutes after one."

At the time the toddler was discovered, police estimate the temperature inside the car was more than 110 degrees. They believe they had been inside the car for more than five hours.

Police were consulting with the Delaware County district attorney’s office over whether criminal charges would be filed.
