Phila. Fire Dept. Launches New Safety Program

by KYW's Michelle Durham

The Philadelphia Fire Department is ratcheting up a program that teams citizens with their staff to help pinpoint fire hazards in their neighborhood.

It's called the Fire Safety Representative Program. And the fire department is looking for one person from each block to be the recipient of e-mails and other literature:

Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers:

"We believe that when we have fire safety representatives that take the initiate to knock on the doors and help the fire department identify homes that need smoke alarms and other services, that it is going to make a difference."

The commissioner says if you don't have a smoke alarm, stop by your local firehouse and they'll get you one...and install it for you. For more information, go to http://www.phila.gov/ If you need a smoke alarm, call 215-686-1176.
