Drexel Professor Reveals Origins of Friday the 13th Stigma

by KYW's Hadas Kuznits

Today is Friday the 13th, and we've all heard of the superstitions:

"Growing up as a kid, Friday the 13th was a bad day."

Dr. Barbara Hornum of Drexel University says Friday the 13th has evolved into an unlucky day over the centuries:

"Initially the two things were separated.  Friday was considered to be an unlucky day in its own right, pretty much from the advent of Christianity and 13 is an unlucky number so falling together it's seen as very unlucky."

Kuznits: "Don't two negatives make a positive?"

"Not in this case!"

So do people still believe in it?

"No, not really -- unless there's a full moon too then people in the city will probably be acting crazy!"

"I grew up with that thought that it was bad so it's like I have to get rid of that thought."

"Friday, another day, last day of the week."

Kuznits: "So that would be lucky, not unlucky."

"Very lucky day, that means the weekend's here, right?"
