Montco Clergy Hold Immigration Protest in Norristown

by KYW's Brad Segall

Local clergy demonstrated outside the Montgomery County courthouse in Norristown Monday saying they will be affected by immigration reform legislation.

Area ministers say the Sensenbrenner legislation making its way through the halls of Congress would make it illegal for them to counsel illegal immigrants. Pastor Luis Mendez questions whether he would have to ask for a green card before helping the members of his congregation:

“And the Bible says that ‘cursed is the man who withholds justice from the alien’ and this nation was built on the biblical foundations. And even though there’s a lot of people out there trying to persuade us away from this, we need to stand on what this nation was built on.”

Pastor Mendez says these residents deserve the opportunity to become productive members of society, who hold good jobs, pay taxes and support their families.
