Mayor Street says cities and states have every right to legislate healthy diets like the bill he signed this past week: a ban on trans fats.
Mayor Street knows that even the controversy-free trans fat ban had its critics; those who worry about government intrusion into people’s lives. But he says local governments like Philadelphia have not just the right, but an obligation, to get involved. That’s because health care costs are determined by region, so everyone pays for the unhealthy diets of a few:
“To the extent that we can ban trans fats, we can get more people drinking water, we can get more people exercising, then that’s a good thing for the city of Philadelphia.”
The trans fat ban comes only five months after Street signed a much more controversial health law -- the ban on smoking.
