Helping Young People Choose Careers

by KYW's Dr. Marciene Mattleman

NOW WHAT?, subtitled  The Young Person’s Guide To Choosing A Career, is a welcome addition  to the career- choice field.  It focuses less on the kind of work and more on the kind of person making the decision. But, it entails involvement on the part of the reader.

Responding to quizzes, charts and checklists, the reader learns how to make informed choices based upon personal characteristics-- not what’s popular, pays the most, or has shortest hours.

According to a Gallup poll, 55% of all US employees are not engaged at work, feel their talents aren’t utilized, have no psychological connection to their work and have little job satisfaction.

With an eight hour work day, plus time to get to work, time spent on buying clothes, getting haircuts and doing other things that make us look good—work demands a great deal of our time.

Nicholas Lore’s book, NOW WHAT?, can lead a high school or college grad to find a practical and appropriate fit-- matching lifestyle, talent and work style with a satisfying, enjoyable career that has one feeling energized, not burned out.
