Police Investigate Massive Theft from Del. Food Bank

by KYW's Jim Melwert

Someone stole a pair of refrigerated truck trailers that were loaded with tons of food out of a the parking lot of the Food Bank of Delaware in the Delaware Industrial Park in Newark.

The two trailers were packed with about 50,000 pounds of donated chicken, destined to needy families, but police say someone stole the trailers on Saturday night.

Delaware State Police corporal Jeffery Whitmarsh:

"This is very sad. You know, this isn't a case of Robin Hood, where someone's taking from the rich and giving to the poor. The Food Bank of Delaware simply serves the poor. This is massive amounts of food product that is not going to make its way to those people who need it the most."

The one truck and trailer have "Food Bank of Delaware" on both sides. And Whitmarsh says the thieves stole a rig from a nearby business to take one of the trailers. That rig has the letters CDC on both sides, while the attached trailer has the food bank label.

Anyone with any information is asked to call police.
