Rendell Tightlipped About Pennsylvania's New Budget Deal

by KYW's Tony Romeo

Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell on Monday afternoon was mum on details of the budget agreement announced in the wee hours of Monday morning (see previous stories).

Governor Rendell says tough economic times that resulted in a smaller-than-expected surplus in the current budget is one reason he trimmed more than $500 million from the new budget he proposed in February. But not wanting to jeopardize the deal, Rendell yesterday afternoon refused to offer specifics about the budget cuts:

“They’ve been specified, and I don’t want to get into them until I the sign the budget. But I will sign the budget and probably deliver a signing message and make myself available to answer all that. But right now, there can be many a slip between the cup and the lip, so I don’t want to get into it.”

The budget deal was reached hours before the deadline but as the state was beginning the new fiscal year on Tuesday, the budget must still be drafted in final form, passed by the legislature and signed by the governor, something not likely to be completed until later this week.
