The gallon milk jug has been given a makeover, but consumers may need some time to get used to it.
Sam's Club grocery manager Nancy Super has spent a lot of time in the dairy aisle the past couple of weeks, helping customers wrap their brains around the newly designed gallon milk jugs:
"They're more rectangular now than square. They're a lot sturdier for support, and I think they fit in today's kind of refrigerators much better because the shape is more towards the refrigerators of today."
Super says the redesigned jugs are more environmentally friendly and economical -- they stack easily on recycled cardboard pallets (right) rather than requiring those old bulky, expensive plastic crates. And, says Super, the saving is passed on to consumers.
The reaction so far?
"I'll give it a try."
"The price is right."
"I don't like the container." (Why is that?) "I don't know, it's weird."
"It's pretty cool -- easier to fit in the refrigerator." (Will it fit in the refrigerator?) "Yes, not a problem."
"My 75-year-old mother will have to relearn to pour milk!"
Indeed the biggest complaint so far involves the difficulty of pouring from the new container.
