Family Fun -- on a Half Tank of Gas

No fuel price worries for this week’s holiday getaway. Jay Lloyd comes up with a trio of nearby options that you can practically coast into.

by KYW's Jay Lloyd

It’s a triple header that’s jammed packed with fun, relaxation, and food, and it’s a family ramble that’ll keep the kids thrilled and the parents pacified.

It takes you from Spring Mountain in central Montgomery County to the Kutztown Festival in nearby Berks County, with a stop in between for some easy fishing or rugged mountain biking.

The attraction at Spring Mountain is the popular Zip Line Canopy tour (right) that whips you through the trees suspended from a harness high over the ski slopes.

Area operator Rick Buckman notes that it’s a thrill without a risk:

“People feel very secure. Our guides are very competent. They went through a lot of training.”

One note: call ahead for reservations.

From Spring Mountain head to Bear Creek, another ski resort, just a short run up Route 29. There’s fishing on a five-acre stocked pond, mountain biking trails, and the relaxation a full-service spa.

Then, drive just a few miles further into Berks County for the annual Kutztown Folk Festival (top photo), for the unique flavor of Pennsylvania Dutch food, music, and culture.

And return home without a pit stop!
