Pa. Troopers Using Penndot Trucks for Holiday Patrols

by KYW's John Ostapkovich

Pennsylvania state troopers will be trying to keep the state's highways safe this holiday weekend, in some cases from the vantage point of Penndot trucks.

Fifteen people were killed in Pennsylvania during last year's Independence Day holiday period and state police spokeswoman Corporal Lynnette Quinn says they're going to work to cut that down to zero. There will be lots of highway patrols, some extra sobriety checks, and a trooper or two with radar in Penndot trucks:

"It's nothing new. It's just that we're utilizing a Penndot truck, a lot of times while they're actually out there working along the highway and the reason being these guys are getting hurt out there, the Penndot workers and this is another avenue for us to ensure their safety, to slow down motorists."

Trooper Quinn says when you see flashing lights ahead, be they police, ambulance, road service or Penndot, move over to give the personal room (see related story).
