A unique organization here in Philadelphia that helps the homeless through a unique activity is celebrating its one-year anniversary (see previous story).
Andrew Marr (right) of Back on My Feet says his organization helps the homeless by engaging them through running:
"Right now we actually have 60 members who run with us on any given morning on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays."
And he says in the past year they've been in existence, they've grown a lot:
"We have 230 volunteers, so our success rate is extremely high.
"When the program moves on and the members move through the program, what we have is our 'Next Steps' program, where people can talk to us about job placement, school, and also housing. We have scholarships and assistance programs in place.
"So right now we probably have a retention rate of 80 percent."
He says that running is a great way to teach people to respect what they can do in their lives by teaching them about health and their bodies -- and by pointing out their running accomplishments.
