Healthy Teeth for Dogs

by KYW's Nan Talleno

If your dog has doggy breath, that could be a sign of illness or gum disease. Just like people, gum disease or gingivitis could lead to a more serious illness and should be addressed.

Aside from painful inflammation and tooth loss, as well as difficulty in chewing, illnesses could include chronic heart, kidney, liver and lung disease. Dogs three years and older have an 85% chance of acquiring gum disease.  Feed your dog a healthy, balanced natural diet.  Limit any chewy snacks.  Always read the labels prior to purchasing treats. Proper chew toys can also help scrape plaque off teeth as well.

But the most effective way to prevent plaque and tartar buildup is by daily brushing. Make sure to ask your veterinarian to show you how.  Never use a human toothbrush or human toothpaste. For easier access, try purchasing a doggie toothbrush that attaches to your fingertip. They are inexpensive and are sold at local pet shops or even at your vet’s office.

Here’s a tip: try getting your puppy used to brushing early in life.
