15 Years Old, and Charged with 6 Montco Holdups

by KYW's Brad Segall

A high school student from Norristown has been ordered held for trial in connection with a string of point-of-gun robberies in four Montgomery County communities.

Prosecutors say 15-year-old Zahir Rembert was responsible for six robberies at convenience stores and gas stations in Plymouth Township, Upper Merion, Norristown, and West Norriton. They say he would walk in and attempt to buy something, then pull a silver handgun on the clerk.

It was surveillance tape from a Lukoil gas station in Plymouth (above) that led police to their young suspect (see previous story). At the Lukoil station, they say, he fired a shot and pistol-whipped the clerk.

Prosecutor John Gradel says the gunpoint robberies carry a mandatory minimum of five to ten years in jail:

"Our position is going to be that he is not amenable to any kind of rehabilitative treatment -- none, zero.  This kid needs to go away and he needs to go away for a long time.”

And Gradel says more charges are coming.

Rembert’s cousin has also been charged in connection with these cases, accused of being the getaway driver.
