A Dog's Fear of Thunder

by KYW's Nan Talleno

The sound of rain can be soothing at times even for your pet, but an all-out thunderstorm can be a completely different story.

Many dogs have a fear of loud noises like thunderstorms and fireworks.  This can be overcome with reconditioning. Here are a few tips.

First, never tell your dog “it’s alright” if he is exhibiting signs of fear.  Instead instantly divert his focus to something positive. While doing so, speak in a comforting tone and give praise as he responds.  Provide a safe place in your home for your dog to hide whenever he needs to, and make that a pleasant experience daily with treats and toys. Make sure it is secure and secluded and during a storm, keep shades and windows closed.

If necessary, play soft music during a storm or add some light noise like a fan.  The hum will help distract and relax him. Maybe keep a special treat handy to give him only when it rains to help change his focus.

What matters most is your reaction to his fear, stay positive. Turn that time into playtime so he’ll associate a new feeling for an old fear.
