Three people have died at the Jersey shore after trying to swim in strong currents whipped up by tropical storm Bertha.
On Saturday, three young men were swimming in Wildwood around 6pm when strong riptides began pulling them under. Coast Guard Petty Officer Chris McLaughlin:
"There was a buoy 100 yards off shore there and it was reported to us that they attempted to swim out to it and that's when they got caught in the riptide."
One of the men managed to get back to shore safely. One, 36-year-old Ismael Lopez of Philadelphia, was rescued but died later at a local hospital. A third man, 28-year-old Juan Moore of Philadelphia, was pulled under. His body had not been recovered as of early Monday morning.
Meanwhile, hours before in Atlantic City, New Jersey, a man was pulled under by rip currents and also died. Tropical Storm Bertha is about 1,000 miles off the Jersey shore and is expected to continue to influence the tides for another couple days (read AP story).
