Assistance and Service Dogs

by KYW's Nan Talleno

There are many breeds of dogs that adapt well as assistance and service dogs, dogs who are assisting people with disabilities to live more independent and fuller lives.

The most popular choices are Labrador Retrievers., Golden Retrievers and of course, German Shepherds.  But many other breeds are used as well including the Husky, Border Collie, Doberman, Boxer, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Dalmatian, Australian Shepherd, Pointer and even Standard Poodles.

These, among other types of dogs, including mixed breeds and shelter dogs, provide different services including being the eyes and ears for those impaired, as well as providing balance and stability.  And they provide support in performing practical daily tasks. Many are even trained to be seizure-alert dogs as well and can detect a problem before a situation occurs.

It’s no wonder why dogs are truly man’s best friend.
