Naming Your Dog

by KYW's Nan Talleno

Naming your dog is a very special thing to every dog owner.  When adopting from an animal shelter, most likely the dog already has a name (if it’s known) or quite often, they may have a temporary one given by the shelter. So it’s up to you to.

Try it out with the dog first.  Many times when adopting from animal shelters, the dog may inherit a new name along with his or her family and the new home.  It doesn’t take long for them to adapt to the new name, though.  All that matters is the energy you put forth when calling him.  He or she will easily adapt to a new name when he equates it with a good feeling and a lot of affection.

The most popular dog names for 2 years in a row according to numerous online surveys is Max followed by Jake and Baily, and the most popular female name this year is Molly followed by Maggie and Daisy.

Whatever you choose, make sure to connect the name with a lot of love.
