The School Nutrition Association is meeting in Philadelphia this week. One of the big draws was a trade show with food demonstrations on how to jazz up school lunches.
Yogurt cream cheese, whole grain pizza, and star fruit. What do all of these have in common? They were all foods being presented on Monday at the School Nutrition Association trade show at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.
Linda Lee is food service director for a school district in Colorado:
"There seems to be a more conscious effort of going to whole grains, and a conscious effort of making healthy alternatives. There was a booth back there that had edamame hummus, which is something that you would not ordinarily think to offer your children. And it tastes wonderful, and I think it might be something that the kids would enjoy, especially the older kids."
Many other echoed those comments, saying the options here stretch much further than the standard chicken nuggets and burgers.
