It's a one-year deal for District Council 33, the largest municipal workers union in Philadelphia. The union struck a tentative agreement with Mayor Nutter, who called the pact historic.
The deal for the more than 10,000 blue collar city workers gives them no raise but an $1,100.00 bonus. The city's contribution to the union's health care plan remains the same. Mayor Nutter returned from vacation to take part in the announcement:
"This helps us to achieve our long term goals, and does not break the taxpayers bank."
Nutter did get 33 to agree to participate in a committee that will look at reducing health care costs to the workers and other issues. Union Chief Pete Matthews said Nutter's tone differed from past mayors:
"And as we go on and negotiate a multi-year contract, I feel good about the conversation that I had with the mayor."
The deal must still be ratified by the rank and file.
Still to be completed is an agreement with the white collar workers union, District Council 47, as well as the firefighters union. Nutter reached a settlement with the FOP two weeks ago.
