Bizarre Crash in Southwest Philadelphia Leaves 1 Driver Dead, 3 Hurt

by KYW's Al Novack

Philadelphia police were awaiting autopsy results to help them figure out what may have caused a bizarre four-vehicle crash on Thursday night in Southwest Philadelphia.

One driver is dead and three others were injured as the result of the accident that happened about 11:30pm, at the three-way intersection of Island Avenue, Elmwood Avenue, and Passyunk Avenue.

It all began when the driver traveling north on Island Avenue lost control of his car and plowed head-on into oncoming southbound traffic.  He hit three cars before coming to rest against a curb.

That driver was pronounced dead at the scene.  Police think he may have suffered some sort of seizure or blackout, and were awaiting autopsy results.  The drivers of the other three cars all suffered minor injuries.
