The Philadelphia Parking Authority is helping bicyclists get around town, by installing parking racks in some key center city locations.
The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia has long maintained that there are not enough racks to accommodate a growing number of riders, and the Parking Authority has taken the lead to install spots in three garages and one lot that it operates.
At the PPA garage at 2nd and Sansom Streets, next to the Ritz movie complex, Coalition advocacy director John Boyle pointed out that sidewalk racks in Old City don't always do the job:
"When the sidewalk cafés come out, they crowd out the bike racks themselves."
Other bike parking racks are going up at 10th and Ludlow, next to Jefferson Hospital; at the Market Street East Gallery, at 9th and Filbert; and at the 15th and Arch surface lot, near City Hall, next to the Municipal Services Building. Each will accommodate about a dozen bikes.
