Opting Out of Medicare Premiums

by KYW's Salil Gutt

Increasing numbers of Americans are choosing to retire overseas. A big issue is what happens to their social security retirement benefits and Medicare.

Nothing changes as far as social security benefits are concerned. You can receive monthly benefits for yourself and spouse to a bank stateside or overseas. Social security checks are sent to some 80 countries.

Medicare is a little dicier. It does not cover care outside the United States. So the temptation is not to apply for Medicare at all if you are living overseas.

Consider this instead.  Everyone is eligible for Part A coverage which is hospital coverage. This is free to all seniors and so there is no reason not to take it. Parts B and D Medicare is for doctors visits, other medical services and drugs and are voluntary programs. This is the component you could opt out of.

However, you must file a form with Social Security -CMS-1763- to formally disenroll.

If you return to the United States at some point in the future you can enroll again for Medicare Parts B and D. You will pay a penalty for late enrollment.
