For anyone newly arrived in a foreign land, finding work can be difficult. So who's hiring immigrants in the Delaware Valley? We visited a local business known for its tradition of hiring immigrants.
Pedro Rymar, now 79, came to Montgomery County, Pa. from Brazil:
"I came in the 1960s and I'm looking for a job. And they direct me to the bearing company, and they hire me as a maintenance man."
About 12 years later, Rymar became the owner of what is now known as the Scheerer Bearing Corporation in Horsham, a company known around the world for its unique ball bearings, and locally for its tradition of hiring immigrants.
One immigrant now working at Scheerer is Steve from Ukraine:
"Just good people, good work. Good company, good bosses. Good everything."
Steve and dozens of other immigrants got their jobs at Scheerer through JEVS (Jewish Employment Vocational Service) Human Services. Larisa Clymer, who came from the Ukraine herself 30 years ago, is a job developer and counselor there:
"If they don't speak English, we have ESL classes. We have computer classes."
Sometimes, Clymer admits, she does a little bit more for her clients:
"Not only with jobs, but sometimes even marry them! (laughs) I introduce them to each other!"
