Russia-Georgia Conflict Stirs Strong Feelings in Locals With Ties

by KYW's Pat Loeb

Some 40,000 immigrants from Russia and former Soviet Republics live in the region -- most of them clustered in Northeast Philadelphia, where the events in Georgia are a hot topic.

Serge, an owner of Cafe Nostalgia in the Northeast, did not mince words:

"This is a real empire of evil, and Mr. Putin is a killer.  Whatever they're doing in Georgia is pure invasion.  They're trying to cover it up simply to destroy the Georgian regime because it's very loyal to West."

Others in his cafe were more circumspect:

"We don't have enough information to have complete judgment about the conflict."

"I think that both sides are currently being misinformed by the media so it's very difficult to make any sort of informed decision."

Some people simply didn't want to give any opinion: One man said, if I agree with the Russians, the Georgians will get me; if I agree with the Georgians, the Russians will get me.

He laughed, but he wouldn't comment.
