A study of Internet speeds finds Pennsylvania in the middle of the pack, right about national average, but the sponsoring organization says that's not the point.

Our information super-highway is not as super as it should be, says Debbie Goldman, policy analyst for the Communication Workers of America, a union with a big stake in Internet infrastructure. 

Based on thousands of tests run through their www.speedmatters.org web site, Pennsylvania and the nation lope along at about 2.3 megabits per second download speed. 

New Jersey and Delaware do better, but even the best is barely 1/3 the speed in France and 1/9th of Japan. 

Goldman says fixing that on a national level is a matter of simple equity:

"We live in a country where we believe in equal opportunity, and right now that includes closing the digital divide, ensuring that every school child has equal opportunity to access information regardless of where they live or what their family earns."

The CWA urges pressing politicians to bring the US Internet up to speed.
