A meeting between Governor Rendell, Mayor Nutter and officials of the Sugarhouse casino is expected sometime after Labor Day. But Sugarhouse will likely prove to be a tougher nut to crack when it comes to the issue of relocation.
After meeting with officials of the Foxwoods casino on Thursday, Rendell and Nutter made the surprise announcement that Foxwoods is, in fact, now willing to consider moving from its waterfront location along the Delaware River in South Philadelphia (right).
But Leigh Whitaker, a spokeswoman for Sugarhouse, says her bosses remain committed to their riverfront site. Still, Whitaker says the meeting will be more than just a case of going through the motions:
“I wouldn’t characterize it as just a courtesy, but a real willingness and desire on our part to hear the concerns of the governor and the mayor and try to work towards a solution.”
Romeo: “But that solution, at this point, does not involve relocation?”
Whitaker: “At this point, we do not believe that re-siting is an option.”
Foxwoods, meanwhile, now says it’s not only willing to consider relocation, but has actually begun looking at other sites (see related story).
