For the third time in four days, officials in Avalon closed beaches on Tuesday as more medical waste washed ashore.
Intravenous needles and caps, cotton swabs, and pill casings don't belong in the ocean or the sand, but there they were -- again -- in Avalon:
"Late in the day on Tuesday, a very small amount -- about 20 pieces of additional medical debris was found."
Scott Wahl with the Borough of Avalon says they shut down the beachfront in the area of the find, from 14th to 22d Street in the north end of town.
"Safety will always be number one. There are other beaches that our visitors and residents can use for recreation and bathing."
After the first and largest waste wash-up on Saturday, a smaller one the next day, and Tuesday's, where the least was found so far, the state attorney general's office is treating it as a criminal investigation.
Crews swept the beachfront on Wednesday morning, and reopened the five-block stretch before 10am.
