Obama Makes Surprise Wednesday Night Appearance at Convention

Team Coverage

Barack Obama made a surprise appearance at his party in Denver on Wednesday night.

KYW's Larry Kane reports that the man from the First State was second to none in a dramatically personal speech that could change the dynamics of this race.

Delaware US senator Joe Biden had the most conversational speech of the convention. It sounded like a fireside chat.

President Bill Clinton was powerful. He left no doubt that he supports Obama.

But Biden delivered a speech that allowed America to see him as people from our area know him: candid and sometimes super enthusiastic and very earthy.

I think the people I watched in the audience were impressed.

Later, the crowd was stunned, even shocked, and delighted when the Democratic candidate for president showed up. On Thursday night the focus shifts to Investco Field at Mile High Stadium, where 77,000 people will watch Barack Obama's acceptance speech.

KYW's Hadas Kuznits got reactions  from the convention floor to Biden's speech and Obama's appearance:

Kuznits:  What did you think about the big finale?

Conventioneer 1:  I almost had a heart attack. (laughs).  I started screaming.  We were standing by the podium, and I was, like, 'Oh, my God, it's Obama and Biden!'

Kuznits: How did Biden do?

Conventioneer 2: I thought he was excellent.

Conventioneer 3: I was especially moved by all the sacrifices Joe Biden made as a single parent.

Kuznits:  Did you have any favorite moments in the night?

Conventioneer 4:  I loved when President Clinton came out, and he got the standing ovation, and that went on for quite some time.

Kuznits:  Whose night was it?

Conventioneer 5:  I think it was O-Biden's night.

Kuznits: O-Biden?  Did you say O-Biden?

Conventioneer 5:  Did I say O-Biden?  Maybe I did say O-Biden.  (laughs).

Kuznits:  I guess it was O-Biden's night.

Conventioneer 5:  Probably it was O-Biden's night.
