Medical Waste Closes Two Beaches in Ocean City, NJ

by KYW's David Madden

Another two South Jersey beaches have been closed, after more medical waste washed up on shore. These were in Ocean City, north of Avalon, where other medical waste was found during the previous several days (related story).

Crews in Ocean City, NJ found a total of five syringes on Thursday -- two during a morning sweep at 36th Street and 39th Street, and three others between 45th and 46th Streets.

As a precaution, the Cape May County health department closed beaches between 38th and 40th Streets (above) and between 45th and 46th Streets.

After the first pair of syringes was found on Thursday morning, Ocean City business administrator Jim Rutala (right) indicated it was probably not related to the Avalon waste:

"This was not the same material as what was found in Avalon, and it’s believed to be isolated incidents."

The southern section of Ocean City beaches that were closed on Thursday are not as popular as those in the center of town, which remained open.

As for Avalon, it’s all clear there after three days of problems since Saturday. The state has posted a $10,000 reward to find whoever’s responsible for dumping off the Avalon shoreline.
