Philadelphia police are looking for a gunman and two accomplices who shot and killed an elderly man during an apparent robbery attempt in the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood Friday night.
Police captain James Clark says the victim was enjoying a social event at the VFW post at 2033 North 33rd St. around 6 p.m. As he sat on the front porch, talking to a friend, Clark says three men approached.
"One of them had gun, pushed the decedent up against a wall, a struggle ensued, we believe it was a robbery, we're not sure of that as of yet.
The victim was taken to Temple Hospital, where he was declared dead.
"Any time you have someone who is on a porch and approached by individuals and subsequently shot and killed, it's something to be very concerned about," says police commissioner Charles Ramsey. "Certainly the age of the individual always heightens that anxiety and fear that people have about their safety."
