Man Attacked by Hammer-Wielding Man on Subway

by KYW's Jim Melwert

Philadelphia police are investigating a disturbing attack that happened on a Septa subway train just after midnight Thursday morning.

A Septa surveillance camera caught the attack.  A 20-year-old man on his way home from work was dozing off listening to his iPod on the Broad Street line near the Fairmont stop when he was attacked by a man with a hammer.

Detective Kenneth Roach says the attacker was traveling with a young child, about five years old:

"It appeared that he was talking to the child.  At times you saw him kiss the child, then apparently he told him to sit down."

Once the child sat down, the man reached into a backpack he was carrying, pulled out the hammer and began swinging wildly. (see photos below)

The attack spilled onto the platform and lasted for several minutes.  Roach says the victim he lucky he escaped with relatively minor injuries.  And it appears to be an unprovoked attack.

Police are asking anyone who saw the attack to give them a call.
