Less than a week after Barack Obama held a rally there, John McCain was traveling to Lancaster, Pa. for an appearance on Tuesday afternoon with his running mate, Sarah Palin.
It appears that Lancaster County, at least for now, has become the battleground within the battleground state of Pennsylvania. Tuesday’s McCain rally was being held on the campus of Franklin and Marshall College, home to professor and political analyst Terry Madonna. He says while Lancaster County has been a Republican stronghold, Democrats have made inroads there:
“I think the Democrats are saying to Republicans, ‘we’re not going to give up in traditional Republican areas,’ and Republicans are saying to Democrats, ‘we not going to let you take over our strongholds.’”
Madonna also notes that Lancaster County is ideally situated for news coverage, being located in the third largest media market in the state, while being close enough to Philadelphia to generate news stories, like this one, in the state’s largest market.
