Final Farewell for Fallen Officer

by KYW's Mike DeNardo

It's an all too familiar ritual that was playing out on Friday as the community gathered to say farewell to another fallen officer.

A caisson with the casket of Isabel Nazario left police headquarters at 7th and Race Streets and made the slow, solemn trip to the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul on Logan Circle.

City officials, police brass, and rank-and-file officers from a number of police departments filed past the casket -- some saluting -- to pay their respects.

Philadelphia police commissioner Charles Ramsey (right) was among those who addressed the gathering, praising Nazario both for her police career and for her personal achievements as a single mother, and trying to provide words of comfort to Nazario's daughter.

Officer Nazario was killed last Friday night when her patrol car was hit by a teenager driving a stolen SUV in Mantua (see related story).

A viewing was held on Thursday night (see related story) in Northeast Philadelphia, and another was scheduled to take place on Friday morning before the funeral mass at noon.

Portions of I-95 were scheduled to be shut down during the funeral procession, as was the area around 18th and Race Streets; check with KYW's Traffic and Transit for the latest updates.

Nazario is the third Philadelphia police officer to be killed in the line of duty since 2006.
