Puppy Mill Measure Goes for Final Vote in Pa. House

by KYW's Tony Romeo

A bill designed to crack down on puppy mills appears headed for a final vote in the Pennsylvania House this week after amendments designed to weaken the measure were beaten back during debate on Monday evening (see related story).

The sponsor of the measure, Westmoreland County Democrat James Casorio, expected a battle when amendments intended to loosen the regulations in the dog bill were debated on the House floor. Even he was surprised when those amendments were defeated by comfortable margins. Why the smooth sailing?

“Quite frankly, I think because the legislators heard from their constituents. The administration said that they had received more correspondence – e-mails, letters, phone calls – on this particular issue than they have in the past six years on any given issue.”

A final vote in the House was expected later on Tuesday or Wednesday.

A spokesman for Republican leaders in the GOP-controlled Senate says they’ll review the bill once it comes over from the House before deciding whether to vote on it before the current two-year session expires in November (see related story).
